Almost every grown up Indian is acquainted with the name of Amarnath Yatra as it is one of the holiest religious trips in the country. Every year, the yatra is organized during the months of July and August during the sawan period. This famous Yatra starts from Chandanwair which is very close to Pahalgam. Our next destination was exactly that. The hill station is a very famous tourist destination. We came to know about many unknown facts related to the Amarnath Yatra.
It is believed that during the months of July and August, a natural shivling is formed in the cave of Amarnath due to an ice stalagmite. Pahalgam used to be a famous site for Bollywood directors. We could spot a number of hotels, tourist huts and modernized hotels, all of them capable of housing numerous tourists. A local resident also told us that one can easily start trekking to various sites from Pahalgam. One can go for trekking and reach the magnificent Kolahoi Glacier covering a 35km long trail passing through pinewoods.
Pahalgam is situated at a very prime location at a height of around 7000 ft. above sea level. It is just 45km from Anantnag and lies along the Lidder River. If you don’t like summers and love to spend life under a cold environment, Pahalgam is a great option. Our stay at Pahalgam was a bit long one. We started with the club park which was a bit crowded. It has been designed perfectly in sync with the rivers running nearby and surrounding hills in the background.
We also did some fishing in the Lidder River and my children were extremely excited. We were aware that we couldn’t catch more than six fishes. We were simply having fun, catching fishes and then throwing them back immediately. We could also some people indulging in river rafting. Next, we went to the Aru village and did some pony ride. We visited the Gauri Shankar temple from where the famous Amarnath Yatra is said to begin. After that, we hired a cab and started towards our next destination.
