Sonmarg Kashmir- Meadow of Gold

After exploring the beauty and royalty of two of the best gardens in the country, it was time to return back to the hotel as it was getting dark. Since we were tired, it didn’t take much time for us to fall asleep. We got up early morning next day because we didn’t want to miss a single moment in the beautiful valley. Out next destination was Sonmarg which is nothing but a hill station located in Ganderbal District. The word Sonmarg stands for Meadow of Gold and it is enough to tell you about the grandeur of the place.

We had to travel for a bit in order to reach Sonmarg from our hotel. But the cleanliness of the roads, freshness of the environment and beauty of the Valley didn’t make us realize that. On reaching the place, we were overjoyed by the massive peaks that could be viewed at a distance. The snow clad mountains along with cerulean sky made our minds go numb. We could see different Himalayan glaciers which were named as Machoi Glacier and Kolhoi Glacier having peaks of more than 5000m like Amarnath Peak, Maachoi Peak, Kolhoi Peak and Sirbal Peak.

There is an alpine valley located close to Nallah Sindh which holds the credit for being Jhelum’s largest tributary. It has a long valley followed by deep rocky gorge, open meadow full of grass and sloped dotted with villages. You can hardly find a hotel or resort in this part of the world as the area becomes impossible to access during the winters thanks to the avalanches and heavy snowfall.

We came to know that Sonmarg holds special importance for the country’s defence as the Indian army uses it as base camp while moving to Ladakh. The place also has historical importance as it is believed to be the gateway to the famous Silk Route. Since we had two children with us, we didn’t move higher despite having the opportunity to access the snow. We felt a bit sad on finding plastic bottles, aluminium foils and food packets littered around the area. The locals also told us that many Bollywood movies have been shot in the picturesque location of Sonmarg.
