Budha Talab, Raipur – The Oldest Water Reservoir

Admittedly, our days in Chhattisgarh were getting more exciting with every passing day and visiting to a tourist spot. I was happy that I had finally managed to spend some quality time with family after long busy schedules in office, and my children and wife were equally happy as they were visiting Raipur with me after a long time. On the fifth day of our stay in Raipur, we decided to visit the Budha Talab. As the name suggests in Hindi, ‘Budha’ means old and ‘Talab’ refers to lake. The Budha Talab is one of the oldest water bodies in the city, which is located in an area known as ‘Purani Basti’, which also means Old Settlement in English.

There is the Dudhadhari Math near the Budha Talab, which makes the impact of the lake even stronger. The math is believed to be 400 years old and it is located in the oldest part of the city. When Raipur used to be a part of Madhya Pradesh and before Chhattisgarh was segregated as a unique state in the map of India, the Budha Talab gained a lot of importance in the state. No doubt, it is unique in its features today too and a large number of people visit the place owing to the natural variation it provides.

There is a park nearby, which is a narrowed pathway amidst the lake. There are trees of beetle nuts planted on either sides of the pathway. The lake holds its importance because of its aesthetics. There is a large statue of Swami Vivekananda meditating in the park. The statue is quite large and forms a gigantic structure in the center. Even the statue is listed in the World Limca Records for its large size and structure. The fountain, which is found amidst the park, is colorful and it splashes water from all the sides.

There are several small food stalls and restaurants found outside the lake and near the lake. The shops outside the park served hot and ready-to-eat food, which satiated our taste buds. The best time to visit the park is during evening and thankfully we had visited during the evening. The view inside the park was enchanting with different flower gardens, which looked beautiful.
