Jagannath Temple Puri – A Marvelous Piece of Architecture

After exploring Bhubaneswar and visiting all the important tourist sites, we decided to go to Puri.  It is located 60 km from the capital Bhubaneswar and is a beautiful beach city on the Bay of Bengal. Opting for a luxurious travel, I booked a luxury bus for the travel. We reached Puri in the evening and checked into a star hotel already booked online. For one who loves nature photography like me, it was an excellent place  to take some beautiful photographs. The city is a famous pilgrim site, and several devotees flock to visit the Shree Jagannatha Temple at Puri, one among the Char Dham pilgrimages. The famous Ratha Yatra conducted here is a beautiful sight to watch and experience.

The next day morning, we got ready to visit the famous Jagannath temple, which was within a distance of 10 minutes from the hotel where we stayed. The temple is dedicated to Jagannath, the Lord of Universe (Lord Krishna). The temple is open from 5 am to 8 pm. As we approached near the temple, we could see many shops on either side of the road selling flowers, sweets and other items that devotees buy to offer at the temple. A lot of other items like Orissa handlooms, show pieces, handicrafts and small mementos were also sold.

As we entered the temple from the main gate, I saw that it is a massive structure with a number of other small temples. There were gates on all the four sides of the tall wall that surrounded the whole structure. Another wall surrounded the main temple. The main sanctum contained the deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhdra and we stood there to offer out prayers.

There were many pillars that were covered with sculptures and stone carvings. It took a few hours to cover the he vast area of the temple. We spent some time there marveling at the sculptures and other architectural works. After I got back to the hotel I was still thinking about the magnificence of the temple and then sat down to write a blog about it.
